Getting Back Into Exercise After a Long Break
Starting again doesn’t mean starting from where you left off. Here’s how to make getting active feel manageable and enjoyable.

It’s easy to feel like you need to get back to where you were before you stopped. You don’t. Every time you come back to exercise, you’re starting from where you actually are today — and that’s a perfectly good place to start.
Start smaller than you think you need to
A short, gentle session is far more useful than an ambitious one you don’t finish. Choosing a Gentle class for your first few sessions back isn’t a compromise — it’s a sensible way to rebuild the habit.
Expect it to feel different for a while
Muscles that haven’t worked in a while will feel it, and that’s completely normal. It settles down as your body reacquaints itself with moving regularly.
A quick note before you start
General fitness information isn’t a substitute for individual medical advice. If you’re unsure whether an exercise or class is appropriate for you — particularly if you have an existing health condition, injury or recent change in your health — speak to an appropriate healthcare professional before getting started.
